What is the procedure?
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the four major ligaments of the knee. The main function of the ACL is to prevent the rotation of the femur (thigh bone) on the tibia and the tibia from sliding forward on the femur. If the ACL is torn the knee becomes unstable and prone to injury. Daily physical activities such as walking become difficult and painful unless the injury is repaired. An ACL repair procedure restores the ligament to its original position allowing the resumption of the knee’s normal range of motion.
What does the package include?
The acl repair package includes transportation between the airport, clinic, and hotel, 4 days stay at a hotel, 5 days stay at the clinic and 7 days at a specialized rehabilitation center. It further includes all consultation and surgeon's fees, all anesthesiologist fees, initial and final examinations and any necessary medication for surgery and recovery.
How is the procedure performed?
The surgeon removes the damaged ligaments using an arthroscopic shaver. The replacement tissues are usually harvested from hamstring muscle tendons located inside the knee or can come from the patellar tendon located in front of the knee. The surgeon then makes a hole from the front of the shin diagonally into the knee ending at the point where ACL attaches itself to the top of the shin. A subsequent hole is then made into the thigh bone. Thereafter the ligament that has been prepared for the replacement is inserted and fixed into place.
General anesthesia is used throughout the entire procedure. The surgery lasts between one to two hours.
What are the benefits of the procedure?
ACL repair undoes the damage of the torn ligament. A week after the surgery the patient is able to resume normal daily physical activities such as walking completely pain-free. A few months later the patient will be able to safely resume physical activity and sports.
